The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has officially lodged a complaint against former world champion GM Vladimir Kramnik, referring him to the Ethics & Disciplinary Commission (EDC) for alleged harassment towards GM Daniel Naroditsky. Naroditsky, a beloved grandmaster and educator, tragically passed away at the age of 29 on October 19, 2023, prompting an outpouring of grief from the chess community. FIDE's press release stated that Kramnik's actions included a 'pattern of conduct' characterized by repeated public accusations against both Naroditsky and Czech GM David Navara, who had opened up about suicidal thoughts following Kramnik's criticisms. The complaint encompasses behaviors spanning two years, citing public statements deemed to violate standards of dignity and respect.
Despite no named complainant, FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich confirmed that Kramnik's statements would be investigated independently. Kramnik has drawn controversy for his stance against alleged cheating in chess, a campaign that he claims does not accuse specific individuals but has been interpreted negatively by many. Chess.com recently muted Kramnik’s account and ultimately issued a permanent ban due to violations of their Community Policy, further complicating his standing within the chess world.
Following Naroditsky’s death, criticism of Kramnik has intensified, with notable players like Magnus Carlsen and Levon Aronian condemning his actions. Other grandmasters, including Hikaru Nakamura, have labeled Kramnik's behavior as harassment. Naroditsky himself had spoken about the mental impact of Kramnik's accusations, stressing the negative effects such scrutiny can have on one’s career and mental health.
Kramnik continued to make statements about Naroditsky after his death, prompting significant public outcry. An online petition has gained over 52,000 signatures, demanding sanctions against Kramnik and FIDE's CEO, GM Emil Sutovsky, for alleged insensitivity in how they addressed Naroditsky's passing.
The case will now proceed through FIDE's Ethics & Disciplinary Commission, which is led by Yolander Persaud. This independent body possesses the authority to impose a variety of sanctions, ranging from warnings to possible revocations of titles or even lifetime bans. Persaud outlined the procedural steps that will follow the filing of the complaint, highlighting the structured approach to investigations in the chess world.
Kramnik declined to comment on his suspension and the ongoing investigation, maintaining his stance against harassment claims. He reiterated that he has never intended to insult or harm Naroditsky in any manner. As this case unfolds, it will be closely monitored by players and fans alike, marking a significant moment in chess ethics and conduct standards.
