The Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) is actively discussing the possibility of hosting matches for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Pune. Kamlesh Pisal, the honorary secretary of the MCA, stated that while discussions are ongoing, RCB has yet to confirm their participation. The team is currently considering several venue options, and a final decision is anticipated post the player auction, which is scheduled for December. Pisal emphasized that various technical aspects need to be finalized before the official announcement. He mentioned that Pune stands out as one of the most suitable locations for RCB after Bengaluru due to its impressive infrastructure, including airport accessibility, hotel accommodations, capacity for fans, and existing fan base.
RCB, known for its star player Virat Kohli, has been a significant contender in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since its inception. The team celebrated its first IPL victory in 2025, ending an 18-year wait by defeating the Punjab Kings in the final. Following this monumental win, RCB planned a victory parade in Bengaluru to celebrate with fans, starting from Vidhana Soudha and ending at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. However, this celebration faced legal hurdles when the government denied permission based on security concerns.
The situation escalated on June 4 when a large crowd gathered outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium, leading to a tragic stampede that resulted in the loss of 11 lives and many injuries. Investigations conducted by a judicial panel revealed accountability on the part of RCB, an event management company, and local police for the failures which contributed to the chaos. Furthermore, a state government committee declared the Chinnaswamy Stadium 'unsafe' for large gatherings and has since recommended that future large-scale events be held at venues capable of managing substantial crowds effectively.
