The HPV vaccine is a crucial tool in preventing cervical and other HPV-related cancers. Dr. Tanaya Narendra, an advocate for sexual health, underscores its significance, especially for individuals aged 9 to 45. She recommends Cervavac, a cost-effective Indian vaccine, along with Gardasil options for older individuals. Both men and women are urged to get vaccinated, as HPV can lead to multiple forms of cancer. By increasing awareness and participation in vaccination programs, lives can be saved, and cancer outcomes significantly improved.

Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death globally, with various forms impacting millions every year. Notably, human papillomavirus (HPV) is linked to several cancers, particularly cervical cancer, which is highly preventable through vaccination. Dr. Tanaya Narendra, an Oxford-trained doctor and reproductive health advocate, emphasizes the critical role of the HPV vaccine in increasing resistance against HPV-related cancers. According to her, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer affecting women in India, highlighting the urgent need for vaccination to reduce mortality rates associated with this disease. Dr. Tanaya articulates that individuals between the ages of 9 and 45 can receive the HPV vaccine, which acts against several strains of the virus responsible for various cancers, including genital cancers. The vaccination not only protects against cervical cancer but also plays a role in preventing other HPV-related malignancies, making it essential for both men and women. When considering which HPV vaccine to choose, Dr. Tanaya recommends Cervavac for individuals aged 9 to 26. This vaccine is produced domestically and has a lower cost of around ₹2000 per dose. For those aged between 9 and 46 years, other options include Gardasil 4 and Gardasil 9, which are developed in the U.S. and come at a higher price—around ₹4500 for Gardasil 4 and ₹10,000 for Gardasil 9. It is crucial for individuals under 15 to receive two doses of the vaccine, while those above this age should complete a regimen of three doses to ensure adequate protection. Interestingly, it should be noted that men should also consider receiving the HPV vaccine despite not being prone to cervical cancer. The virus can lead to cancers affecting the penis, anus, and throat, making vaccination important for all genders. Dr. Tanaya strongly encourages everyone, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation, to take the HPV vaccine in order to foster a healthier and more cancer-free life. This proactive step in health management underscores the growing importance of preventative healthcare measures in combating cancer-related diseases.
